Chapter 3 - The Recorder That Vanished.

Claire read the message twice before handing the photograph to Hale.

Vanessa's face lost the last of its color.

"I didn't do that."

Claire studied her carefully.

"You expected me to believe the shawl was your biggest idea tonight?"

"I wanted people to see what your version of heroism looks like."

"My version?"

Vanessa folded her arms, but the gesture looked defensive now.

"My father's been blamed inside closed rooms for a year while you get medals."

Hale's gaze sharpened.

"Who told you that?"

"People who don't salute every time Claire enters a room."

Claire ignored the insult.

"Did your father tell you about the recorder?"

Vanessa hesitated.

That hesitation answered more than her words.

"He said there was a recording that proved the aircraft was unstable because of Commander error."

Claire felt an old memory open with painful clarity.

Northstar had been carrying a civilian research crew and military technical specialists across the North Atlantic when warning lights began flashing in sequence.

The stabilization system locked the aircraft into a dangerous roll before the storm ever reached them.

Claire had ordered the crew to disconnect the automated controls.

The manual override failed.

Then heat and smoke filled the rear equipment bay.

Claire had crawled through the narrow passage to release the jammed controls by hand while the copilot fought to keep the aircraft level.

The scars on her back came from that passage.

The recorder would have captured every warning.

It would also have captured Claire saying the manufacturer's system name aloud.

More importantly, it would have preserved the exact timing of every command from mission control, including the order that kept Northstar moving forward after Claire first asked to turn back.

That timeline could separate an honest mistake from a deliberate decision.

"If the recording blamed me, your father would want it released."

Vanessa's lips parted.

Claire continued.

"He wouldn't want it missing."

The ballroom music stopped beyond the walls.

A moment later, Hale's phone vibrated.

He read the screen and swore under his breath.

"What happened?"

"The archive server just went offline."

Claire moved toward the door.

"Then whoever sent that envelope is still here."

Hale caught her arm.

"You're not on duty tonight."

Claire looked down at his hand, then back at him.

"Someone accessed your credentials, knew the evidence inventory, and delivered a threat inside a secured gala."

Hale released her.

"Fine."

Vanessa stepped forward.

"I'm coming."

Claire almost laughed.

"No."

"If someone is using my father's name, I want to know who."

"You just tried to humiliate me in front of two hundred people."

"And I was wrong about why you had the scars."

The admission came out stiffly.

It was not an apology.

But it was the first crack in Vanessa's certainty.

Hale pointed toward the ballroom.

"Stay with the guests."

Vanessa's phone buzzed before she could answer.

She glanced down.

Claire watched her eyes move across the message.

Then Vanessa locked the screen too quickly.

"What did it say?"

"Nothing."

Claire stepped closer.

"Vanessa."

For the first time, Vanessa looked frightened rather than angry.

She turned the phone around.

The message came from a contact saved only as DAD.

DO NOT TALK TO BENNETT.

A second message appeared while they watched.

LEAVE THE BUILDING NOW.

May you like

Then a third.

THE RECORDER WAS NEVER LOST.
