Chapter 2 - The Name Behind The Glass.

Rear Admiral Hale led Claire through a side door while the orchestra resumed with an uncertain softness behind them.

The private corridor was lined with portraits of decorated officers, all painted with the calm expressions of people whose worst nights had already been turned into history.

Claire's worst night was still alive.

Hale handed her shawl back after retrieving it from Vanessa without a word.

Claire draped it over one arm rather than covering the scars.

"How does she know about the recorder?"

Hale stopped outside a closed library.

"I was hoping you could tell me."

"I haven't spoken about Northstar outside the inquiry."

"I know."

Inside the library, a single lamp glowed beside a leather chair and a locked document case rested on the table.

Hale closed the door.

"At seventeen hundred today, someone accessed the sealed recovery archive using credentials assigned to my office."

Claire's expression did not change, but every instinct sharpened.

"Your credentials?"

"A cloned credential set."

Hale opened the case and removed a red folder.

"The person searched for the Northstar recorder, the maintenance logs, and your medical evacuation report."

Claire looked toward the ballroom wall as if she could see Vanessa through it.

"She knew where my scars came from before tonight."

"Apparently."

Hale placed a photograph on the table.

It showed a scorched metal module sealed inside an evidence bag.

Claire recognized it immediately.

The Northstar flight recorder had been recovered from the rescue aircraft three days after the mission.

She had watched investigators place it into a secure case.

Then it vanished from the official inventory.

"You told me it was transferred to federal custody."

"That was what I was told."

Claire's jaw tightened.

For fourteen months, she had accepted silence because the inquiry remained classified.

She had accepted rumors that she had pushed the aircraft beyond safe limits.

She had accepted magazine stories that called her reckless.

She had even accepted the scar jokes whispered by people who thought a decorated uniform could protect a person from humiliation.

What she had never accepted was the possibility that evidence had been deliberately removed.

Hale slid a second photograph toward her.

It showed Grant Cole, Vanessa's father, shaking hands with a procurement official outside Cole Aeronautics.

"Northstar's emergency stabilization system was built by Cole Aeronautics."

Claire already knew that.

What she did not know was why Hale looked ashamed while saying it.

"The system failed before we entered the storm."

"Yes."

"Then why was the public report written as pilot error?"

Hale took a breath.

"Because the final report was changed after it left my command."

Claire stared at him.

The library door opened before either of them could continue.

Vanessa stood there, still wearing her glittering silver gown.

She no longer looked smug.

She looked furious.

"You really should lock doors when you're discussing classified lies."

Hale stepped between her and the table.

"Leave."

Vanessa ignored him and looked at Claire.

"My father says you destroyed his company to save your reputation."

Claire's voice stayed level.

"Your father's company was never named publicly."

That stopped Vanessa.

Only for a second.

But Claire saw it.

Vanessa knew too much and not enough.

Then a sharp sound came from the hallway.

A glass shattered.

Hale opened the door.

The corridor was empty except for a dropped service tray and a black envelope lying in the middle of the carpet.

Claire picked it up.

Her name was printed on the front.

Inside was a single photograph of the Northstar wreckage.
