Chapter 13 - The Woman Who Changed Sides.

Vanessa did not apologize first.

Claire respected that more than she expected.

An apology offered before the truth could have sounded like another performance.

Instead, Vanessa unlocked her phone and handed it to the investigator standing beside Hale.

"Marcus sent me background material for three weeks."

Vane stepped away from the podium.

"You have no idea what you're talking about."

Vanessa ignored him.

"He told me Commander Bennett had manipulated the inquiry."

She looked around the ballroom.

"He told me the scars were from reckless decisions she made after ignoring warnings."

Claire could feel hundreds of eyes moving between them.

Vanessa's voice tightened.

"And I wanted to believe him because it made my father easier to defend."

Grant lowered his head.

Vanessa continued.

"So I did something cruel and stupid tonight."

Now she looked directly at Claire.

"I pulled away her shawl because I thought humiliation would prove a point."

She paused.

"It proved only what kind of person I was willing to become when I cared more about winning than knowing the truth."

The words cost her something.

Claire could see that.

Vane tried to leave the podium area.

Two security officers quietly blocked the aisle without touching him.

Hale stepped forward at last.

"Colonel Vane, investigators need to speak with you regarding unauthorized archive access and evidence handling."

Vane laughed softly.

"Based on what, a frightened executive and his angry daughter?"

Maya walked into the ballroom holding a printed copy of the original failure notice.

"Based on engineering records you acknowledged before Northstar flew."

Vane looked at her as if she were a ghost.

"You were supposed to stay out of this."

The sentence escaped before he could stop it.

Hale's gaze sharpened.

"That sounded remarkably specific."

Vane realized the mistake and changed direction.

"This entire room is turning an administrative disagreement into theater."

Claire finally stepped forward.

Her shawl was still around her shoulders.

She removed it herself.

The movement drew the room's attention back to the scars Vanessa had exposed earlier.

This time, Claire chose the moment.

She folded the shawl over her arm.

"No, Colonel."

Her voice remained calm.

"The theater was pretending those marks came from my failure."

She looked around the room.

"The truth is less convenient."

Claire did not describe every detail of the mission.

She did not need to.

She said the stabilization system failed, her crew followed emergency procedures, and twenty-two people returned because everyone aboard did their job under impossible circumstances.

Then she turned toward Vane.

"The question is why people who knew about that failure decided silence was safer than accountability."

Vane's face hardened.

"You think one recording makes you untouchable?"

Claire shook her head.

"No."

"Then what do you think it makes you?"

"A witness."

That answer changed the room.

Claire was not asking for revenge.

She was refusing to be turned into either villain or symbol.

She was simply placing herself where the facts could finally reach her.

The investigators escorted Vane from the ballroom for questioning.

No one cheered.

Hale had ordered the room to remain respectful, and Claire was grateful for that.

Vanessa stood alone near the center aisle after he left.

She picked up the champagne shawl from the chair where Claire had placed it earlier.

Then she walked toward Claire and held it out with both hands.

"I don't expect you to forgive me."

Claire took the shawl.

"Good."

Vanessa swallowed.

Claire continued.

"Because forgiveness is not what tonight is for."

Before Vanessa could answer, Hale's secure phone rang.

He listened, then looked at Claire with an expression she could not read.

"The federal review office just reopened Northstar."

Claire felt the room disappear around her.

Hale added one more sentence.

"And they want you in Washington at eight tomorrow morning."
