Chapter 13 - The Courthouse Steps

The Cook County Courthouse was a massive, imposing structure of gray stone and towering pillars. It looked a lot like the Holloway estate, only this building was designed for actual justice.

We walked up the steps together—me, Hannah, and Arthur.

A swarm of local reporters was gathered near the entrance, snapping photos of Grant and Margaret as they arrived. Grant looked terrible. His tailored suit hung loosely on his frame, and the arrogant sneer had been replaced by a pale, sweating desperation. Margaret walked beside him, clutching her designer handbag like a shield, ignoring the shouted questions.

Grant saw us. He stopped on the steps, his eyes locking onto Hannah. He looked like he wanted to yell, to demand her submission one last time.

Hannah didn't look away. She stopped, squared her shoulders, and stared back at him with absolute, freezing indifference.

Grant broke first. He looked at the ground and scurried into the courthouse.
