Chapter 20 - The Boundary

I picked up a clean rag and wiped down the counter, never breaking eye contact with Margaret.

"You didn't come here for a loan, Margaret," I said smoothly. "You came here because you have alienated every single friend and ally you ever had with your cruelty, and you are desperate for a victim who will take pity on you."

"I'm desperate," she sobbed. "I'm a mother trying to help her son."

"Your son is a monster," Hannah said, stepping up beside me. Her voice was firm, completely devoid of fear. "And you built the cage he kept me in. You watched him bruise my arms and you told me to cover it up with makeup."

Margaret looked at Hannah, her jaw trembling. "Hannah, please..."

"Get out of my diner, Margaret," I said, pointing a rigid finger at the door. "If you ever cross this threshold again, I will have you arrested for trespassing. Walk away and never come back."

Margaret looked at our unyielding faces. She turned around and walked back out into the freezing rain.
