Chapter 29 - The Supply Chain Squeeze

While Hannah was building a beautiful new future, Marcus Vance was busy trying to destroy ours. The

retaliation from Vanguard Acquisitions didn't come in the form of a loud confrontation or a brick through the window. It came quietly, systematically, and with the ruthless precision of a corporate giant trying to starve out a small business.

It started on a Monday morning. Our primary supplier, a local distributor who had been delivering our fresh produce and meat for over a decade, failed to show up at 5:00 AM.

I stood at the back loading dock, holding a clipboard and checking my watch. By 6:30 AM, I was actively angry. I pulled out my phone and dialed the distributor's direct line.

"Tom," I said when he finally answered, my tone sharp. "Where is my delivery? Frank has a diner full of people expecting breakfast, and I am completely out of fresh eggs and bacon."

Tom let out a heavy, incredibly uncomfortable sigh. "Evelyn... I am so sorry. I can't make the delivery today. Or ever again."

My brow furrowed in confusion. "What are you talking about? We have a contract."

"Vanguard Acquisitions bought out my entire distribution company over the weekend," Tom explained, his voice thick with guilt. "They made an aggressive cash offer I couldn't legally refuse. The new corporate management sent down a directive this morning. They canceled all accounts with independent restaurants on Elm Street. They said it was a 'restructuring of corporate priorities,' but Evelyn... they specifically flagged Carter's Table. They are trying to cut your supply lines."

I hung up the phone, a cold, hard knot forming in my stomach. Vanguard wasn't just threatening us; they were actively laying siege to our diner. They were using their massive financial leverage to buy up the local supply chain, hoping to choke us out of business so we would be forced to sell the property.

I walked back into the kitchen, where Frank was anxiously waiting by the massive steel stove.

"Where's the food, Eve?" Frank asked, wiping his hands on his apron.

"They aren't coming, Frank," I said grimly, walking over to the emergency cash lockbox in the back office. "Vanguard bought them out and canceled our account."

Hannah walked into the office, having heard the conversation. "What are we going to do, Mom? We have a lunch rush in four hours."

I pulled out a thick stack of emergency cash and handed it to her. I didn't panic. Panic was a luxury I couldn't afford.

"You and David take my truck," I commanded, my voice dripping with absolute resolve. "Drive to the commercial wholesale markets two towns over. Buy everything we need for the next three days in cash. Load it into the truck. Vanguard thinks they can starve us out because we rely on a delivery truck. They forgot that we know how to hustle."

Hannah grabbed the cash, a fierce, determined fire lighting up her eyes. "We'll be back in two hours, Mom. Tell Frank to get the ovens hot."
