Chapter 19 - The Beggar at the Door

The peace of our new routine was interrupted only once.
It was raining heavily on a Tuesday evening. The diner was mostly empty. The front door chimed, and a soaked, shivering figure walked in.
It was Margaret.
She stood dripping on the linoleum floor, looking around the warm, brightly lit diner. She looked completely broken.
"Evelyn," Margaret rasped, her voice trembling. "Please. I have nothing left. The lawyers took the house. They took the accounts. I’m living in a motel in Cicero."

Hannah stepped out of the kitchen, stopping dead in her tracks when she saw her former mother-in-law.
"I need a loan, Evelyn," Margaret begged, tears mixing with the rain on her cheeks. "Just enough to get an apartment. Grant's lawyers are demanding more money for his appeal. Please. You won."
