Chapter 18 - The Hardware Store

“We are going to build a treehouse,” Richard announced at the breakfast table, causing Leo to nearly drop his spoon into his bowl of oatmeal.
“A real treehouse? With a ladder and a roof?” Leo asked, his eyes wide with absolute disbelief.
“A real one,” Richard confirmed, tapping the edge of the table. “But to build a treehouse, a father needs a highly skilled assistant. And we need supplies. Are you ready for a trip into the village?”
An hour later, Richard’s SUV pulled into the small, gravel parking lot of the local village hardware store. It was a rustic, family-owned shop filled with the smells of cut lumber, motor oil, and fertilizer. The bell above the door jingled cheerfully as they walked inside.
“Morning, folks!” called out an older man from behind the counter, wearing a plaid flannel shirt and thick suspenders. “Haven’t seen you around these parts before.”
“We just moved into the old Sterling estate just up the ridge,” Richard explained, extending a hand. “I’m Richard. This is my son, Leo.”
“Ah, Sarah’s brother! Welcome to the valley,” the owner smiled, shaking Richard’s hand firmly. “I’m Tom. What can I help you boys with today?”
“We need wood, nails, and a very good hammer,” Leo announced proudly, puffing out his small chest. “We are building a treehouse.”
“Is that so?” Tom chuckled, leaning over the counter to look at the boy.

“Well, you came to the right place. Let’s go out to the lumber yard and find you some sturdy oak boards.”
As they walked through the aisles selecting tools and measuring wood, Richard felt a profound sense of normalcy. Nobody here cared about his massive corporate wealth or the scandalous tabloid headlines surrounding his divorce. In this small, quiet village, he was simply a father buying wood to build a treehouse with his son. It was a beautiful, grounding reality.
