Chapter 26 - Clara's Birthday

|

Clara had been the silent, unshakeable backbone of their family during the darkest times. When Richard discovered that today was her sixty-fifth birthday, he and Leo immediately launched a highly secretive, covert operation.

While Clara was out grocery shopping in the village, Richard and Leo completely took over the kitchen.

“We need more chocolate frosting, Daddy!” Leo ordered, standing on a chair as he aggressively mixed a bowl of cake batter, sending cocoa powder flying everywhere.

“I am adding it as fast as I can, Chef Leo,” Richard laughed, scraping the sides of the bowl.

By the time Clara’s car pulled back into the gravel driveway, the kitchen was an absolute disaster zone, but sitting proudly on the table was a massive, slightly lopsided chocolate cake adorned with dozens of brightly lit candles.

When Clara walked through the door carrying a bag of groceries, Richard and Leo jumped out from behind the counter.

“Surprise! Happy Birthday, Clara!” they yelled in unison.

Clara dropped her keys on the counter, her hands flying to her mouth as tears of profound, genuine shock and joy filled her eyes.

“Oh, my goodness,” she whispered, walking over to the table. “You made this for me?”

“I mixed the batter all by myself,” Leo announced proudly, wiping chocolate frosting off his nose. “Daddy just helped with the hot oven.”

“It is the most beautiful cake I have ever seen,” Clara cried, pulling Leo into a tight hug and looking up at Richard with immense gratitude.

“You are family, Clara,” Richard said softly, placing a hand on her shoulder. “We wouldn't be here without you. You protected him when I couldn't. Today, we celebrate you.”

Clara blew out the candles, the kitchen filled with laughter, chocolate, and the undeniable, beautiful warmth of a family forged not by blood, but by unwavering love and loyalty.
