Chapter 25 - A New Rhythm

|
The transition from a high-powered, ruthless corporate CEO in downtown Madrid to a countryside father required a massive professional pivot. Richard sat in his newly organized home office, the windows thrown wide open to let in the fresh autumn breeze.
He was on a video conference call with his board of directors back in the city.
“Richard, the shareholders are getting restless,” the interim CEO stated, his face projected on the large monitor.
“They want to know when you are returning to the central office. The Valencia acquisition needs your direct oversight.”
“I am not returning to the central office,” Richard stated firmly, leaving absolutely no room for debate.
“I am stepping down as active CEO. I will retain my majority shares and transition into a remote consulting role as Chairman of the Board.”
The board members on the screen exchanged shocked, nervous glances.
“But Richard, the company needs your daily presence! You cannot run an empire from a farmhouse!”
“I am no longer interested in running an empire,” Richard replied smoothly, looking out the window just in time to see Leo chasing a butterfly across the lawn.
“I am interested in raising my son. I will review the quarterly financials, and I will join the monthly executive meetings via video link. If that is unacceptable to the board, I will gladly liquidate my shares and sell the company.”
There was a profound, terrified silence on the other end of the call. They knew Richard was entirely serious, and they knew the company would collapse without his financial backing.
“A remote Chairman role is entirely acceptable, Mr. Sterling,” the interim CEO quickly backpedaled.

“Excellent,” Richard smiled, closing his laptop screen with a satisfying snap.
He had officially severed the final, heavy chain that bound him to the toxic, demanding life of the city. He walked out of his office, completely free, and went outside to help his son catch the elusive butterfly.
