Chapter 28 - Winter Preparations

|

The air grew sharply cold as November settled over the valley, signaling the rapid approach of winter. Living on a large countryside estate required significant physical preparation, a stark contrast to the automated, effortless luxury of the city penthouse.

Richard spent his Saturday mornings outside, wearing heavy work boots, thick denim jeans, and a flannel jacket, chopping firewood for the upcoming winter storms.

He swung the heavy steel axe down with practiced, rhythmic precision, splitting the thick oak logs cleanly in two. The physical exertion was incredibly therapeutic. Every swing of the axe felt like he was driving a wedge further between his present happiness and his dark past.

Leo sat safely on the porch steps, wrapped in a thick wool coat, watching his father work with absolute awe.

ā€œYou are very strong, Daddy,ā€ Leo observed, taking a sip of hot chocolate Clara had prepared for him.

ā€œIt takes a lot of wood to keep a big house warm, buddy,ā€ Richard panted, wiping sweat from his forehead with the back of his gloved hand. ā€œWe have to make sure Clara’s toes don't freeze.ā€

ā€œI can help carry the small pieces!ā€ Leo offered, jumping up and running over to the woodpile.

Richard smiled, handing his son a few lightweight pieces of kindling. Together, they made several trips back and forth, stacking the wood neatly against the stone wall of the back porch.

Working with his hands, feeling the cold air in his lungs, and watching his son eagerly participate in the daily chores of life brought a sense of grounded masculinity and profound purpose back to Richard’s soul. He was no longer just a wealthy executive; he was a provider, a protector, and a father in the truest sense of the word.
