Chapter 22 - The Thunderstorm

|
The weather in the countryside was vastly different from the micro-climate of the city. There were no skyscrapers to block the wind, and when a storm rolled in over the valley, it was an immense, powerful display of nature.
It was late Tuesday evening. The sky had turned a deep, bruised purple, and the heavy, humid air signaled the impending storm. Suddenly, a massive crack of thunder shook the windows of the estate, followed immediately by a brilliant flash of jagged lightning.
In the city, thunderstorms terrified Leo. The noise would bounce off the concrete buildings, and his mother would often scream in frustration if the power flickered, transferring her anger onto the frightened child.
Richard hurried out of his study, expecting to find Leo hiding under a bed in absolute terror.
Instead, he found his son sitting on the large, plush window seat in the living room. Clara was sitting right beside him, wrapped in a thick quilt, holding two mugs of warm milk.
āLook at the sky, Daddy!ā Leo pointed a tiny finger at the window as another streak of lightning illuminated the rolling hills.
āIt looks like fireworks!ā
āYou arenāt scared, buddy?ā Richard asked, genuinely surprised, walking over to join them on the wide window seat.
āClara said the thunder is just the clouds bumping into each other because they are in a hurry,ā Leo explained confidently, taking a sip of his warm milk.
āAnd we are safe inside our strong house.ā

āThat is exactly right,ā Richard smiled, wrapping his arm around his sonās shoulders.
They sat there for an hour, entirely mesmerized by the fierce beauty of the storm. The terrifying, booming noises that once represented chaos and anger now simply represented nature. The safe, warm environment they had cultivated had completely overwritten the boyās trauma. The storm raged outside, but inside the estate, there was nothing but profound peace.
