Chapter 24 - The Treehouse

|
Saturday morning was dedicated entirely to construction. Richard and Leo stood at the base of a massive, ancient oak tree located securely in the center of the backyard. The lumber they had purchased from Tom’s hardware store was neatly stacked on the grass, alongside a toolbox filled with shiny new tools.
“Alright, assistant,” Richard said, wiping sweat from his brow under the warm sun.
“Hand me that large two-by-four. We need to secure the main foundation platform first.”
Leo struggled slightly under the weight of the wood, but he proudly dragged it over to his father. Richard lifted it effortlessly, placing it across the sturdy, v-shaped branches of the oak tree. He handed Leo a small, lightweight hammer.
“Do you want to drive the first nail?” Richard asked, guiding the boy’s hand.
“Yes!” Leo cheered.
With Richard holding the long steel nail steady, Leo brought his small hammer down. It took several messy, crooked strikes, but eventually, the nail sank deep into the solid oak wood, firmly securing the first board of their new sanctuary.
“Perfect hit,” Richard praised, ruffling his son’s hair.

For the next four hours, they worked tirelessly. They measured, cut, and hammered. Clara brought out sandwiches and cold lemonade, sitting on a lawn chair to watch their progress.
As Richard nailed the final wooden plank into the floor of the treehouse, he realized this structure was a massive metaphor for their new life. They were taking raw, disjointed pieces of wood and building something secure, elevated, and beautiful. They were building a fortress of joy, high above the ground, where the darkness of their past could never reach them.
