Chapter 30 - Christmas in the Country

|
Christmas in the city had always been a cold, performative affair. Leoās mother used to hire professional decorators to design a sterile, flawless, silver-and-white tree that Leo was explicitly forbidden from touching. Gifts were impossibly expensive, wrapped perfectly, but entirely devoid of any genuine emotional thought or love.
This year, Christmas was beautifully, wonderfully messy.
They cut down their own pine tree from the edge of the property and dragged it into the living room. Leo and Clara spent hours stringing uneven popcorn garlands and hanging mismatched, colorful, handmade ornaments on the branches.
On Christmas morning, the fire roared warmly in the massive stone hearth. Leo tore into his presents with wild, uncontainable excitement.
There were no expensive, cold electronic gadgets. Richard had bought him a beautiful, hand-carved wooden train set, a massive box of colorful art supplies, and a customized childrenās saddle for riding Aunt Sarahās horses.
āLook, Clara! A train!ā Leo cheered, immediately assembling the wooden tracks on the living room rug.
Richard sat in the armchair, holding a mug of hot coffee, watching his son play. Clara sat on the sofa, opening a small, beautifully wrapped box Richard had given her, revealing a delicate gold necklace.
āThank you, Richard. It is beautiful,ā Clara whispered, her eyes shining with tears.

āMerry Christmas, Clara,ā Richard smiled warmly.
He looked at the chaotic, messy, incredibly warm living room. The tree was slightly crooked, paper wrapping was torn to shreds across the floor, and his son was smiling from ear to ear. It was the most imperfectly perfect Christmas of his entire life, marking the true, undeniable rebirth of his family.
