Chapter 19 - The Final Legal Call

|
The sharp ringing of the cell phone broke the afternoon tranquility of the estate. Richard was sitting on the back porch, sketching out rough dimensions for the treehouse on a piece of graph paper, when he saw the caller ID. It was Arthur Vance, his lead custody attorney in Madrid.
Richard’s stomach tightened instinctively, a phantom reflex from months of legal warfare. He pressed the green button and held the phone to his ear.
“Arthur. Tell me it is good news.”
“It is the best news, Richard,” Arthur’s voice came through the speaker, sounding exhausted but deeply triumphant.
“The appellate court just handed down their final decision twenty minutes ago. They completely rejected her emergency appeal. The permanent restraining order is locked in, and your sole legal and physical custody of Leo is absolute.”
Richard closed his eyes, leaning his head back against the wooden porch pillar. He let out a long, shuddering breath that seemed to carry the weight of a thousand sleepless nights.
“Are there any remaining loopholes?” Richard asked, needing absolute certainty.
“None,” Arthur confirmed firmly. “Furthermore, her financial assets have been officially frozen pending the embezzlement trial. She cannot afford to hire another attorney even if she wanted to. She is completely neutralized, Richard. You and your son are entirely safe.”
“Thank you, Arthur,” Richard whispered, his voice thick with profound emotion. “For everything you have done for my family.”

“Enjoy the countryside, Richard,” the lawyer replied warmly. “You earned it.”
Richard hung up the phone and placed it facedown on the wooden table. He looked out over the sprawling green pastures. The dark, terrifying shadow of his ex-wife had officially been erased from their lives. The legal ink was dry. The victory was final. He wiped a single tear of pure relief from his cheek and picked up his pencil to finish drawing the treehouse.
