Chapter 1: The Flickering Screens

The tension in the grand white lobby of the Sterling estate was thick enough to cut with a knife. Victoria stood rigid, her sparkly burgundy dress shimmering under the cold LED lights of the high ceiling. Her silver teardrop earrings trembled slightly as she glared at Clara, the young blonde maid who was currently weeping into her hands. Julian, dressed in his impeccable forest green double-breasted suit, walked slowly toward the wall of security monitors. His movements were deliberate, carrying the weight of a man who ruled his business empire with quiet precision.

"Julian, this is a waste of time," Victoria snapped, her voice echoing off the polished marble floors. She adjusted the sleek bun at the back of her head, her manicured nails digging into the strap of her own handbag. "The girl was caught red-handed. The bag was on her bench. She is a common thief, and she doesn't belong in this house."

Julian did not answer immediately. He paused, looking at the security chief, who quickly sat at the main terminal. Julian raised a hand, gesturing for quiet. "Rewind to three o’clock, Thomas," Julian said, his tone low and even.

The monitors flickered, transitioning from the live feed of the grand lobby to a recorded loop from two hours prior. Clara looked up, her blue eyes wide and red-rimmed, her white ruffle headband slightly askew. She clasped her hands tightly against her apron, her breath coming in shallow, trembling gasps. She knew her livelihood, and her family's future, depended on what those screens revealed.

The footage showed the grand lobby, bathed in the soft afternoon light. The tufted beige bench was clearly visible in the center of the frame. At three-fifteen, a figure entered the frame. It was not Clara. It was Victoria herself.

On screen, Victoria walked briskly across the lobby, carrying the luxury brown leather handbag. She paused near the bench, looking around to ensure she was alone. With a swift, deliberate movement, she placed the handbag on the beige leather cushion. Then, she took a small, glittering object from her pocket—a diamond tennis bracelet—and dropped it inside the open zipper of the bag. She walked away, leaving the bag behind.

Ten minutes later, the footage showed Clara entering the lobby with a feather duster. She approached the bench, noticed the abandoned luxury bag, and gently picked it up to place it securely on the side table so it wouldn't fall. That was the exact moment Victoria had returned, screaming accusations of theft.

Julian watched the screen in silence. He did not yell. He did not show anger. Instead, he slowly turned his head to look at his fiancée. Victoria’s face drained of color, her aggressive posture instantly collapsing into stiff defense.

"It appears," Julian said, his eyes locking onto Victoria's, "that the bag was not stolen. It was planted."

Clara let out a soft sob of relief, her shoulders finally dropping as the heavy weight of false accusation was lifted from her chest.
