Chapter 11: Midnight in the Study

The hours dragged on as the Sterling estate prepared for the inevitable arrival of the authorities. Julian had spent the afternoon coordinating with his legal team and the local police department, providing them with digital copies of the ledger and the security footage. The atmosphere in the house was incredibly tense, like the quiet before a massive storm.

By midnight, a heavy silence had once again descended upon the estate. Clara was in the library, organizing some of Julian’s personal files, trying to keep her mind occupied. She couldn't shake the feeling of unease that had been lingering in her chest all evening.

Suddenly, the lights in the library flickered and went completely out, plunging the room into darkness. Clara gasped, dropping her folder. She waited for the backup generators to kick in, but the house remained dark and silent.

Using the flashlight on her phone, Clara cautiously made her way out of the library and into the hallway. The grand lobby was bathed in pale moonlight shining through the high arched windows. As she approached the grand staircase, she noticed a faint, flickering light coming from Julian's private study.

Clara walked silently toward the study, her heart pounding. Through the crack in the door, she saw a figure moving in the shadows. It was Victoria. She was dressed in a dark trench coat over her burgundy dress, desperately searching through Julian’s filing cabinets with a small penlight.

"Where is it?" Victoria muttered to herself, her voice tight with panic. "Where did he put the secondary backup drives?"

Clara realized Victoria was trying to destroy the digital copies of the evidence before the police arrived. If she succeeded, the legal process would be significantly delayed, giving Victoria a chance to flee the country.

Clara knew she should run and find Julian, but she also knew that if Victoria found the drives, she could destroy them in seconds. Steeling her resolve, Clara pushed the study door open.

"Stop, Victoria," Clara said, her voice remarkably steady despite the adrenaline surging through her veins.

Victoria spun around, her penlight shining directly into Clara’s eyes. She let out a sharp, bitter laugh. "You again. You just don't know when to stay in your place, do you?"

"The police are on their way, Victoria," Clara said, taking a step forward. "It’s over. Destroying those drives won't save you. Julian has already sent copies to his lawyers and the federal prosecutors."

Victoria’s face contorted in rage. "I don't care about his lawyers! I just need to get out of here, and I'm not leaving empty-handed." She reached into her trench coat pocket and pulled out a heavy, silver paperweight she had grabbed from the desk, brandishing it like a weapon. "Get out of my way, Clara, or I will make sure you never see your brother again."

Clara stood her ground, refusing to let fear dictate her actions. "No, Victoria. I won't let you steal anyone's future ever again."
