Chapter 5: Shadows of the Past

By midnight, the Sterling estate was silent, shrouded in a thick fog that rolled in from the nearby coast. Inside his dimly lit study, Julian sat behind his massive mahogany desk, surrounded by leather-bound books and flickering computer screens. He had spent the last three hours analyzing his foundation’s financial logs, and what he found made his blood run cold.
The discrepancies were subtle, hidden deep within complex layers of corporate routing. Victoria had been incredibly clever. She had used her position as the foundation's creative director to authorize payments to shell companies under the guise of marketing and event coordination. The trail always ended at Aegis Hope, which was registered to a holding company in Delaware.
A soft knock on the door interrupted his thoughts. Julian looked up to see Clara standing in the doorway, wearing a simple gray sweater and trousers he had arranged for her.
"I couldn't sleep, Mr. Sterling," Clara said quietly. "Every time I close my eyes, I hear Miss Victoria shouting at me."
"Come in, Clara," Julian said, gesturing to the leather chair opposite him. "I'm looking at the files you mentioned. You were entirely correct. The signatures on these digital authorizations are forged. It's a highly sophisticated forgery, but the pattern is clear."
Clara sat down, her hands folded in her lap. "Is it bad, sir?"
"It’s catastrophic," Julian admitted, rubbing his temples. "Over four million dollars have vanished from the foundation’s accounts over the last eighteen months. That money was earmarked for pediatric research and low-income medical grants. She wasn't just stealing from me; she was stealing from vulnerable children."
Clara’s face darkened with sorrow. "That is terrible. My brother Leo was supposed to receive a grant from a similar foundation last year, but they ran out of funding. I wonder now how many other families lost their hope because of someone's greed."
Julian looked at Clara, seeing a strength in her that defied her quiet, delicate appearance. "I promise you, Clara, we will recover those funds, and I will personally ensure your brother gets the best care available. But first, we need the physical ledger. Victoria always kept a leather-bound notebook where she drafted her event budgets. I suspect she kept the real account numbers in it."
"I know where she keeps it," Clara said, her voice barely a whisper. "She has a private vanity case in her bedroom. She never lets anyone touch it, not even the cleaning staff. She always locks it herself."
Before Julian could respond, the study door creaked open further. Victoria stood in the entrance, her dark hair now loose around her shoulders, wearing a silk robe. Her eyes were cold, scanning the room before landing on Clara.
"Still plotting, I see," Victoria said, stepping into the room. "An administrative assistant, Julian? Really? You’re sharing my private business with a girl who scrubs your floors."
"This office is off-limits to you, Victoria," Julian said, his voice flat and authoritative.
"I came to get my handbag, Julian," Victoria said, pointing to the desk where the luxury brown leather bag now sat. "And to warn you. If you go public with this, the Sterling Foundation's reputation will be ruined. No one will donate to a charity run by a man who couldn't even see his own fiancée was robbing him."

She smiled coldly, a predatory glint in her eyes. "Think about your legacy, Julian. Sometimes, it's cheaper to keep your mouth shut."
