Chapter 8: A High-Society Facade

Julian immediately stepped in front of Clara as she exited the room, shielding her from view as the guest suite door began to open further. He escorted her quickly down the hallway, their footsteps silent on the thick carpet. When they reached the safety of the main study, Clara pulled the black ledger from her blazer pocket, her hands trembling.
"I got it," she gasped, handing it to Julian.
Julian took the book, his fingers tracing the leather cover. "Outstanding work, Clara. You have courage that many in my circle could only dream of." He opened the ledger, his eyes scanning the handwritten entries. The notes were meticulous, detailing exact percentages diverted to offshore accounts, complete with transaction IDs and banking routing numbers.
"This is the smoking gun," Julian said, his voice laced with grim satisfaction. "She has been doing this for almost two years. It's an ironclad case."
Before they could celebrate, Julian's phone buzzed on the desk. He answered it, listening intently for a moment before hanging up. His expression grew tense.
"What is it, Mr. Sterling?" Clara asked.
"The board of directors is arriving early," Julian said, adjusting his tie. "Victoria has called an emergency meeting. She’s attempting to launch a preemptive strike, claiming that I am mismanaging the foundation's funds and using you as a cover. She’s trying to force a vote of no confidence against me."
Clara’s heart sank. "She's trying to ruin you before you can expose her."
"She is trying," Julian agreed, his voice cool and calculated. "But she doesn't know we have this ledger. The board is meeting in the grand dining room in thirty minutes. We will let her present her case. We will let her think she has won."
"And then?" Clara asked.
"And then, we reveal the truth," Julian said, looking at Clara with a calm, reassuring smile. "I want you by my side, Clara. You are the key witness to her forgery. Are you ready for this?"
Clara took a deep breath, thinking of her brother Leo, who was currently resting in a hospital bed, waiting for a miracle. She thought of the families who had been denied aid because of Victoria’s greed. Her fear transformed into a solid block of determination.
"I am ready, Mr. Sterling," Clara said firmly.
Half an hour later, the grand dining room was filled with the influential members of the Sterling Foundation’s board. They sat around the long mahogany table, their expressions grave. Victoria sat at the far end, looking stunning in her sparkly burgundy dress, her silver teardrop earrings catching the bright light of the chandelier. She looked confident, a smug smile playing on her lips as she whispered to the board members next to her.
Julian walked into the room, his forest green suit replaced by a sharp, authoritative black charcoal suit. Clara followed closely behind him, carrying a folder of documents. The room fell silent as Julian took his seat at the head of the table.

"Thank you all for coming on such short notice," Victoria began, standing up and casting a cold, triumphant glance at Clara. "I called this meeting because we have a serious crisis of leadership at the Sterling Foundation, and it starts at the very top."
