Chapter 2: The Unraveling Truth

Victoria tried to recover her composure, but the security footage left no room for denial. She took a step toward Julian, her silver earrings catching the light. "Julian, darling, you don't understand," she said, her voice dropping to a persuasive whisper. "I was testing her. We have so many valuables in this house, and she is new. I needed to know if we could trust her. It was a simple test of character."

Julian remained completely still. His double-breasted forest green suit looked sharp, mirroring his cold, professional demeanor. "A test of character, Victoria? Or a deliberate attempt to ruin a young woman's life?" His voice was remarkably quiet, yet it carried an undeniable authority that made the spacious lobby feel incredibly small.

Clara stood nearby, wiping her tears with the hem of her white apron. She looked at Julian with profound gratitude, though she still trembled from the sheer terror of the ordeal. "I would never steal anything, sir," she whispered. "My mother raised me to respect other people's property. I only wanted to keep the bag safe."

"I know, Clara," Julian said softly, his expression softening for a fraction of a second as he looked at the maid. He turned back to Victoria, his gaze hardening once more. "You set a trap. You used a family heirloom to frame an innocent employee. Why?"

Victoria’s eyes darted around the room, looking for an escape, but the security team stood silently by their monitors, and the truth was displayed in high definition on the screens behind her. Her fingers clenched into tight fists. "She was snooping, Julian! She was looking through files she had no business touching. She is not as innocent as she looks."

"Is that true, Clara?" Julian asked, turning his attention back to the young woman.

Clara swallowed hard, her eyes darting briefly to Victoria before returning to Julian. She hesitated, her small hands trembling. "I was cleaning the study yesterday, Mr. Sterling. I found some papers that had fallen behind the heavy oak desk. I didn't mean to pry, but I saw... I saw things that looked wrong. Financial documents with your signature, but they didn't look like your handwriting."

Victoria’s face went pale. "She's lying! She's trying to distract you from her own incompetence!"

Julian raised his hand, silencing Victoria instantly. The authority in his gesture was absolute. He looked at Clara, his keen mind already putting the pieces of a much larger puzzle together. "What kind of documents, Clara?"

"They were offshore account transfers, sir," Clara whispered, her voice steadying as she realized Julian was genuinely listening to her. "And charity donation receipts that looked altered."

Julian’s brow furrowed slightly. He looked at Victoria, who was now staring at Clara with pure venom. The silence in the lobby was deafening as Julian realized that this confrontation was no longer about a misplaced handbag. It was about a betrayal that went far deeper into the heart of his personal and professional life.
