Chapter 10: The Price of Silence

The black ledger sat in the center of the polished mahogany table like a ticking bomb. Victoria stared at it, her breathing suddenly shallow, the sparkly burgundy of her dress reflecting the cold light of the room. Her hand reached out instinctively, but Julian placed his hand firmly over the ledger before she could touch it.
"This ledger," Julian announced to the silent board, "was recovered from Victoria’s private vanity. It contains handwritten entries of every single transaction routed to Aegis Hope, along with the routing numbers of her personal offshore bank accounts. The handwriting is undeniably hers."
Arthur reached for the book, flipping through the pages. His expression grew increasingly grim with every second. "This is undeniable," he whispered, looking up at Victoria with deep disappointment. "Victoria, you have been systematically draining the foundation's reserves. These funds were meant for the children's hospital grants."
The other board members erupted into a flurry of angry discussions. The illusion of Victoria’s innocence was shattered completely.
"This meeting is adjourned," Julian said, standing up and addressing the board. "My legal team is already preparing the formal charges, and the authorities have been notified. I ask for your patience as we work to recover the stolen funds."
The board members nodded, quickly gathering their papers and exiting the room, leaving Julian, Clara, and Victoria alone once more.
Victoria stood frozen, her eyes darting between Julian and Clara. The elegant facade was entirely gone, replaced by a desperate, feral anger. "You think you’ve won, Julian?" she hissed, stepping closer to the table. "You think this little charity case is going to save your reputation?"
She turned her gaze to Clara, her voice dropping to a venomous whisper. "How much is he paying you, Clara? A few thousand dollars? A medical treatment for your pathetic brother? I can double it. I can triple it. I have millions hidden where Julian’s lawyers can never find it. Walk away now. Tell the police you lied, that you forged the ledger to frame me because I threatened to fire you. Do this, and your family will never have to worry about money again."
Clara looked at Victoria, feeling a profound sense of pity for the woman. Victoria lived in a world where everything, including loyalty, honesty, and human life, had a price tag.
"My brother's life is not for sale, Miss Victoria," Clara said softly but with absolute conviction. "And neither is my integrity. You stole money from sick children who had no other hope. No amount of money could ever make me help you cover that up."
Victoria sneered, her fingers twitching. "You're a fool. Both of you are fools."
"The only fool here is you, Victoria," Julian said, his voice flat and uncompromising. "You believed that your status and wealth made you untouchable. But you forgot that the truth always finds a way out. Now, I suggest you return to your room and pack your things. The police will be here shortly."

Victoria glared at them, her chest rising and falling rapidly. Realizing she had no moves left, she turned and walked out of the room, her high heels clicking a frantic, hollow rhythm on the marble floor.
