Chapter 13: The Departure

The grand white lobby of the Sterling estate was filled with the quiet, efficient movement of law enforcement officers. Two uniformed police officers stood near the staircase, guiding Victoria down the steps. She had replaced her sparkly burgundy dress with a simple dark coat, her hands cuffed in front of her. She kept her head down, her dark hair falling forward, hiding her face from the flashing lights of the police cruisers parked outside the glass doors.

Julian stood near the tufted beige bench, his hands in his pockets, watching the scene with a calm, solemn expression. Clara stood beside him, her presence steady and supportive.

As Victoria reached the bottom of the stairs, she paused for a brief moment, her eyes locking onto Julian’s. There was no anger left in her gaze, only a profound, hollow emptiness. She looked at Clara, giving a slight, barely perceptible nod—an acknowledgment of defeat from a woman who had finally run out of moves.

"Take her out, please," Julian said quietly to the officers.

The heavy oak doors of the estate opened, and Victoria was led out into the cool, damp night air. The doors closed behind her, shutting out the noise of the sirens and the flashing lights, returning the grand lobby to its natural, peaceful silence.

Julian let out a long, slow breath, his shoulders dropping slightly as the immense tension of the past forty-eight hours finally began to dissipate. He turned to Clara, his expression filled with genuine warmth.

"Thank you, Clara," Julian said sincerely. "If it weren't for your honesty and your courage, she would have continued to destroy lives, including mine."

"I only did what was right, Mr. Sterling," Clara replied softly, her blue eyes clear and calm. "Anyone in my position would have done the same."

"I disagree," Julian said, shaking his head. "Many people would have taken the bribe, or stayed silent out of fear. You chose the hard path, the honest path. That is a rare quality, and it is something I deeply value."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small business card, handing it to her. "I have already spoken with Dr. Mercer. He has cleared a spot for your brother Leo at the university clinic. His evaluation is scheduled for tomorrow morning at nine. A private car will be here to take you and your mother to the hospital."

Clara’s heart swelled with an overwhelming sense of gratitude. She looked at the card, her eyes filling with happy tears. "I don't know how I can ever repay you for this, sir."

"You already have, Clara," Julian said, his voice soft and kind. "By bringing truth back into this house. Go get some rest. You have a big day tomorrow, and a very bright future ahead of you."

As Clara walked up the grand staircase to her room, she felt a profound sense of peace. The storm had passed, and the white lobby, which had once felt cold and intimidating, now felt like a place of hope and new beginnings.
