Chapter 9: Pieces of the Puzzle

Victoria stood tall, her presence radiating a calculated elegance that had charmed the high society of the city for years. "Over the past several months," she began, gesturing toward the board members, "I have noticed major discrepancies in our financial distribution. When I tried to investigate, Julian shut me out. Yesterday, I discovered he has hired a new 'assistant'—a young maid with no financial background—and has given her unrestricted access to our most sensitive archives."

She paused, letting her words sink in. Several board members whispered among themselves, casting skeptical glances at Clara, who stood quietly behind Julian’s chair.

"I believe Julian is using his position to divert foundation funds," Victoria continued, her voice dripping with fake concern. "And he is using this girl as a scapegoat. When I confronted them, Julian threatened to end our engagement and throw me out. I had no choice but to call this emergency meeting to protect the integrity of our beloved charity."

One of the senior board members, an elderly man named Arthur, looked at Julian. "Julian, these are exceptionally grave accusations. What do you have to say in your defense?"

Julian did not look panicked. He sat back in his chair, his hands clasped calmly in front of him. "I appreciate Victoria’s sudden interest in the foundation's financial health," he said, his voice smooth and steady. "However, her timeline of events is somewhat distorted. Clara, would you please present the documents?"

Clara stepped forward, her heart beating steadily. She opened her folder and distributed copies of the offshore transaction records to each board member.

"What are these?" Arthur asked, putting on his reading glasses.

"These are bank transfer records from the Sterling Foundation to an entity called Aegis Hope," Clara explained, her voice clear and articulate. "If you look at the signatures authorizing these transfers, they bear Mr. Sterling's name. However, a forensic analysis of the handwriting shows they are sophisticated forgeries."

Victoria laughed mockingly. "And we are supposed to take the word of a former maid over documented banking records? This is absurd, Julian. You are grasping at straws."

"We also have security footage," Julian added, gesturing to the large flat screen on the dining room wall. "Which shows Victoria attempting to frame Clara yesterday morning by planting a luxury handbag containing stolen items on her bench. This was done to discredit Clara before she could bring these forged documents to my attention."

The screen flickered to life, showing the clear footage of Victoria placing the bag on the bench and dropping the diamond bracelet inside. The board members gasped, their murmurs turning into shocked silence.

Victoria’s face hardened. "That is a private family matter, Julian! It has nothing to do with the foundation’s finances!"

"It has everything to do with it," Julian said coldly. "Because the money you stole was used to fund your personal lifestyle, including the very jewelry you used to frame my assistant. But we don't have to rely on digital records or footage. Clara, show them the physical ledger."

Clara reached into her folder and pulled out the small black leather-bound notebook, placing it gently on the center of the mahogany table. Victoria’s eyes dilated with sudden, absolute panic.
