Chapter 6: A Shared Confession

The silence that followed Victoria's threat was heavy. Julian did not flinch. He simply stared at her, his emerald green eyes reflecting the pale light of his computer screens. He stood up slowly, towering over his desk, his presence commanding and unyielding.
"My legacy is built on integrity, Victoria," Julian said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "Not on a facade of lies. If the foundation suffers, we will rebuild it. But I will not allow a thief to dictate the terms of my life or my business."
Victoria’s smile faltered, her confidence shaking under his intense gaze. She snatched her luxury brown leather handbag from the desk, her manicured fingers gripping the handle tightly. "We will see what the board says when they learn about your sudden lapse in judgment," she spat, turning on her heel and sweeping out of the room, slamming the door behind her.
Clara let out a breath she hadn't realized she was holding. "She is so powerful, Mr. Sterling. I’m afraid of what she might do to you, to the company."
Julian sat back down, his expression softening as he looked at the young woman. "Power without truth is fragile, Clara. Victoria's entire world is built on a house of cards. Once the first one falls, the rest will follow rapidly."
He leaned forward, placing his hands on the desk. "Tell me about Leo, Clara. What is his condition?"
Clara’s eyes softened, a faint, tender smile gracing her lips. "He has a rare spinal condition, sir. He needs a highly specialized surgery, but the waitlist for state funding is years long, and private treatment is far beyond what I can earn. That’s why I took the job here. The pay was better than any other estate, and I hoped I could save enough for his medication, at least."
Julian felt a deep pang of empathy. He had lost his own younger sister to a sudden illness years ago, which was the very reason he had founded the Sterling Charity in the first place. Seeing Clara’s devotion to her brother touched a deep, quiet part of his soul.
"You won't have to worry about that anymore," Julian said softly. "Tomorrow, I am contacting Dr. Mercer, the chief of neurosurgery at the university clinic. He is a close friend and a board member of my foundation. We will get Leo evaluated immediately."
Tears welled up in Clara's eyes, but this time, they were tears of profound hope. "I don't know how to thank you, Mr. Sterling. I was just trying to do my job, and now you're saving my family."
"You saved me from making a terrible mistake, Clara," Julian replied, looking at the empty space where Victoria had stood. "If you hadn't spoken up, I would have married a woman who is actively destroying the lives of the people I am trying to protect. You owe me nothing. In fact, I am deeply in your debt."

He stood up and walked to the window, looking out into the foggy night. "Tomorrow, we find that ledger. It is the key to locking Victoria out of my life and ensuring she pays for what she has done. Sleep well, Clara. Tomorrow will be a long day."
