Chapter 20: Echoes in the Dark

Three weeks passed. The search was officially called off, Lydia presumed dead. But the house began to feel suffocating. Grant started finding things. A piece of torn white lace on the back patio. A faint smell of river water and lavender in the hallways.

He told himself it was grief, or perhaps guilt. He had chased her to her death. But the paranoia set in when he received a blank envelope in the mail. Inside was a single, damp photograph of the old textile mill. No note. No return address.

Someone knew what happened on that roof. Someone knew about the key. Grant realized he couldn't just sit and wait for the ghost of his dead fiancée to haunt him. He had to know what she died for. He took the brass key, put on his coat, and drove into the city.
