Grant froze. Footsteps echoed on the hardwood. Peering over the banister, he saw Lydia. She hadn't stayed asleep. She was frantically searching the living room, tossing cushions and overturning vases. She was desperate.
Grant slipped out the back window, dropping quietly into the garden bushes. He watched from the shadows as Lydia tore through his mother's home. She was out of time, and Vance was likely breathing down her neck. Grant now held all the cards, but he knew confronting a desperate animal was dangerous.
