Chapter 9: Eleanor Awakes
Grant received a text from the hospital: Eleanor had regained consciousness. He sped back to the ICU. His mother looked frail, swallowed by the white hospital sheets, but her eyes were lucid.
"She tried to take it, Grant," Eleanor whispered, her voice raspy. "She found out about the inheritance box. She told me if I didn't give her the key, she would make sure you never spoke to me again."
Grant held her uninjured hand, tears finally breaking through his stoic facade. He promised his mother that Lydia would never hurt them again.
