Chapter 21: The Vault of Sins

The vault was located beneath an ancient, heavily guarded bank in the financial district. The brass key slid perfectly into Box 404. Grant's heart hammered against his ribs as the bank manager left him alone in the viewing room.

He opened the metal lid, expecting stacks of bearer bonds, diamonds, or cold, hard cash. Instead, the box was filled with aged documents, old journals, and birth certificates.

Grant began to read, and as he turned the fragile pages, the blood ran cold in his veins. The journals belonged to Eleanor. They detailed a lifetime of ruthless acquisitions, blackmail, and corporate sabotage. But the most horrifying document was a legal settlement from twenty-five years ago. Eleanor had forced a rival business partner into bankruptcy, leading to the man's suicide.

Attached to the settlement was a family photo of the ruined man. He was holding a little girl. A little girl with unmistakable, piercing blue eyes. Grant dropped the paper. The girl was Lydia.
