Chapter 12 - The Secret Envelope

Natalie sat back heavily in her wooden chair.
Their Uncle Raymond. Her father’s older, supposedly successful brother. Quiet, heavily polished, incredibly respectable Raymond, who had hugged Natalie fiercely at the funeral and told her to take very good care of her mother. Raymond, who had stayed uncomfortably close to Marlene for all the years afterward. Raymond, who had looked down at the floor like a coward when Marlene violently slapped her.
“That doesn’t make any sense,” Natalie said, shaking her head. “Raymond is a retired accountant.”
“I strongly think he’s been secretly giving her massive amounts of money for years to cover the shortfall,” Chloe theorized.
“But why would he do that?”
“I don’t know.”
Natalie vividly remembered Raymond’s face at the engagement party. He hadn't looked shocked by the violence. He hadn't looked angry.
He had looked deeply ashamed.
Chloe leaned forward across the small table. “There’s something else, Nat.”
Natalie braced herself for the impact.
“Mom aggressively told me late last night that if you kept maliciously digging into the accounts, you’d permanently ruin Dad’s good name.”
Natalie’s fingers tightened painfully around her ceramic mug. “She left me a very threatening voicemail saying something incredibly similar.”
“Do you think it’s actually true?” Chloe asked, her voice small.
“I honestly don’t know what to think anymore.”
Chloe nodded, looking incredibly small and vulnerable.
For a very long moment, they sat in the uneasy, loaded quiet between old, festering hurt and new, fragile possibility.
Then Chloe slowly reached into her designer purse and pulled out a slightly crumpled, folded envelope.
“I quietly took this before I sneaked out this morning,” Chloe confessed.
Natalie stared at it, her heart rate accelerating.
“What is it?”
“I don’t know. It was hidden in Mom’s locked desk drawer. She was so hyper-focused on furiously calling you last night that she foolishly forgot where she put the key.”
Natalie did not reach out to touch it.
“Chloe, physically stealing from her could make things exponentially worse legally.”
“It’s absolutely not hers,” Chloe stated firmly.
“How do you know that?”
Chloe slowly pushed the envelope across the wooden table.
Natalie saw the distinct, familiar handwriting immediately on the front.
Her father’s handwriting.

For Natalie when she is truly ready.
The entire world violently narrowed down to those seven written words.
