Chapter 26 - Stepping Into the Dark|

Time seemed to slow down. The mercenary cocked his weapon, a cruel smile twisting his scarred face. Chloe screamed. Natalie’s mind raced, recalling the heavy bronze paperweight she had seen on the manager’s desk when she first entered.
“Okay! Okay, I have it!” Natalie yelled, reaching slowly into her coat pocket. “Just let my sister go. She doesn't know anything.”
The mercenary kept his gun trained on Chloe but shifted his gaze to Natalie’s hands. “Toss it slowly.”
Instead of a key, Natalie grabbed the bronze paperweight off the desk and hurled it with all her might directly at the mercenary’s face. The heavy metal smashed into his nose with a sickening crunch. He staggered backward, his gun firing blindly into the ceiling.
A split second later, Ethan burst into the room and tackled the man to the floor, knocking him unconscious with a brutal strike to the temple. Ethan was bleeding from a cut above his eyebrow, but his eyes were entirely focused on Natalie.
“Are you hurt?” he asked, breathing heavily.
“I’m fine,” Natalie said coldly, stepping over the unconscious man. She looked down at her mother, who was hyperventilating on the floor.
“You are coming with us,” Natalie told her mother. “Not because I care if you live or die, but because you are going to tell me every single detail about Marcus Sterling’s operation.”
Silas’s extraction team arrived moments later, securing the perimeter and ushering them into a convoy of armored vans. As they drove toward a secure safehouse on the outskirts of the city, Chloe held onto Natalie’s arm, terrified.

“Nat, what is happening?” Chloe whispered. “Who are these people?”
“Our father wasn't who we thought he was, Chloe,” Natalie looked out the window into the dark city. “And starting tonight, neither am I. I am taking down the syndicate.”
