Chapter 18 - The Fall of the Matriarch

|

The silence in the living room was deafening.

“I don't know what you're talking about,” Marlene attempted to lie, but her voice wavered pathetically.

“We found Dad’s letter,” Chloe said, her voice shaking but brave. “I know he’s my biological father, and I know Elena was my mother. I know you lied to me my entire life.”

Marlene’s face crumpled. The aristocratic, controlling mask shattered completely, revealing the terrified, bitter woman beneath.

“I raised you!” Marlene screamed at Chloe, tears of rage springing to her eyes. “I took you in when you were a bastard child and gave you everything! This is how you repay me? By siding with her?”

“You didn't give me everything,” Chloe shot back, finally finding her strength. “You used me as a prop to look like a saint, while secretly punishing Natalie for being his legitimate daughter.”

Natalie turned her lethal gaze to Raymond.

“And you,” Natalie said, stepping toward him. “We know you’ve been blackmailing her for decades. You helped drain Dad’s estate to keep the secret quiet. My lawyer, Leah Whitaker, is filing a motion tomorrow morning. The probate court is going to audit every single account. They are going to trace every dollar you extorted from this family.”

Raymond stood up quickly, raising his hands defensively. “Now, let’s be reasonable here, Natalie. There’s no need to involve the courts. We can settle this privately.”

“There is no settlement,” Natalie said coldly. “You stole my future. You stole Chloe’s trust. You are both going to lose absolutely everything.”

Marlene dropped her wine glass. It shattered against the hardwood floor, mirroring the destruction of her carefully curated life.

“You can't do this to me,” Marlene sobbed, sinking to her knees amidst the broken glass. “I’ll be ruined. My reputation...”

“Your reputation was always a lie,” Natalie said, feeling absolutely no pity.

She turned and walked toward the front door, pulling Chloe gently along with her. They stepped out into the cool evening air, leaving the toxic wreckage of their family behind them in the living room.
