Chapter 17 - The Ultimatum

Armed with the truth, Natalie felt a profound, overwhelming sense of liberation. The guilt that had shackled her for twenty-nine years instantly evaporated.
She turned to Leah. “I want to file the accounting request immediately. I want everything exposed. Every stolen dollar, every illegal transfer Raymond facilitated.”
Leah nodded firmly. “I will file the motion with the probate court first thing Monday morning. Marlene will be legally compelled to produce the records or face severe criminal charges for embezzlement.”
Natalie then turned to Chloe, who was weeping silently.
“We are going to get through this,” Natalie promised, reaching across the desk to hold her sister’s hand tightly. “You are still my sister. That doesn't change. But Mom’s control over us ends today.”
They left Leah’s office together, unified for the first time in their adult lives.
When Natalie finally returned to her apartment, Ethan was waiting anxiously in the living room. She collapsed into his arms and told him everything—the affair, the secret adoption, Raymond’s blackmail, and Marlene’s massive financial theft.
Ethan listened with quiet, simmering fury. “What happens now?” he asked.
“Now,” Natalie said, her eyes cold and resolute, “we confront her.”
Sunday evening, Natalie and Chloe drove together to Marlene’s immaculate suburban house. They didn't knock; Natalie used her old key to unlock the front door.
They found Marlene sitting in the formal living room, aggressively drinking a large glass of wine, scrolling angrily through her phone. Uncle Raymond was sitting casually in an armchair across from her.
Marlene looked up, her face twisting into a furious scowl.
“How dare you walk into my house after the scene you caused last night!” Marlene shrieked, standing up. “And Chloe, get over here right now!”
Chloe didn't move. She stood firmly beside Natalie.
“She’s not going anywhere with you, Mom,” Natalie stated, her voice echoing in the large room.
“You have no right—”

“I know about Elena Voss,” Natalie interrupted smoothly.
Marlene froze instantly, the wine glass slipping slightly in her grip. Raymond sat up straight, his face draining of color.
