Chapter 16 - The Dawn at the Lake House|

Two weeks later, the morning sun broke over the calm, glass-like surface of Lake Champlain in northern Vermont.
The air was crisp and clean, carrying the fresh scent of pine needles and damp earth. There were no sirens, no flashing lights, no hospital monitors screaming in the quiet room.
I sat on the wooden porch of my father's secluded lake house, a warm cup of coffee held between my hands. My leg casts had finally been removed three days ago, replaced by lightweight physical therapy sleeves. I could walk on my own now—slowly, but with an unshakeable strength.
Down on the wooden dock, Chloe was laughing as she helped my father untie a small wooden rowboat, her bright voice floating across the water like music.
Elena walked out onto the porch, wearing a comfortable knitted sweater, holding a folder of official legal documents.
"Julian signed the final divorce papers yesterday," Elena said, setting the folder on the porch table beside me. "The federal prosecutor agreed to a plea deal. He gets fifteen years for corporate espionage and conspiracy. He won't be coming near you or Chloe ever again."
I looked down at the divorce papers. For eleven years, I had thought my signature on legal documents with Julian meant stability. Now, signing my name felt like setting myself free.
"And Vance's network?" I asked.
"Completely dismantled," Elena replied, leaning against the porch railing. "The virus your father uploaded wiped every backup server across three continents. The Department of Justice is seizing all Aegis Global assets as we speak. The ledger is officially destroyed."
I looked out toward the lake, watching my father teach Chloe how to hold an oar properly.
"He saved us," I murmured softly.

"He spent twenty years preparing to save you, Audrey," Elena corrected gently. "But in the end, you were the one who walked through those main gates at Sector 4. You saved yourself."
