Jax scrambled around his workbench, throwing on a pair of rubber electrostatic gloves. He carefully picked up the glowing crystal drive, placing it inside a lead-lined faraday cage before connecting it to an isolated, standalone terminal.
"The Aegis Core is a myth," Jax muttered rapidly as his fingers flew across the keyboard. "Rumor had it, a shadow syndicate was building a secondary internet. An un-hackable, quantum-encrypted grid designed to overwrite the current global infrastructure."
"Overwrite it how?" Elena asked, leaning against the server rack.
"Total subjugation," Jax explained, bringing up a complex web of schematics on his monitor. "If this drive activates, it deploys a zero-day virus into every satellite, every banking ledger, and every military defense grid on Earth. The Architect becomes the absolute dictator of the digital age. He could crash the stock market, launch missiles, or turn off the power grid of entire nations with a single keystroke."
I looked down at Chloe, who was sleeping peacefully on a worn-out couch in the corner. "And the DNA lock?"
Jax typed a few commands, bringing up a heavily redacted genetic sequence. "The Architect was paranoid. He knew a standard password could be cracked. So he locked the deployment sequence to a unique biometric signature. Your daughter’s DNA."
"Why Chloe?" Marcus demanded, his fists clenching.
"Because of you, Marcus," a chilling, digitized voice suddenly echoed through the warehouse's surround-sound speakers.
Everyone froze. Jax stared at his monitor in absolute horror as the screen turned pitch black, replaced by a single, pulsing red waveform.
"You built the foundation for my empire, Marcus," the voice continued, smooth and entirely devoid of emotion. "It is only fitting that your bloodline holds the key to its completion."

"Who are you?" I demanded, drawing my pistol and aiming it at the speakers.
"I am the future, Audrey," the Architect replied. "And you have exactly sixty hours to bring the girl to me. Or there will be nowhere left on this earth for you to hide."
