Chapter 25 - The Gala Trap

|
That evening, the Grand Regency Ballroom was draped in silk banners, sparkling crystal chandeliers, and white roses for Victoria Sterling’s annual Winter Philanthropy Gala.
I stood near the grand staircase wearing a dark velvet evening gown, my posture regal, my expression unreadable. Beneath the heavy fabric of my dress, a concealed wire was taped securely against my ribcage, transmitting a live audio feed directly to Elena, who was parked three blocks away in a surveillance van.
"You're in position, Audrey," Elena's voice echoed faintly through my microscopic earpiece. "Remember, we don't have federal clearance for a raid yet. We need Victoria to admit her connection to the Vanguard on the wire."
"Understood," I murmured, taking a glass of champagne from a passing waiter's tray.
Across the crowded room, Victoria Sterling held court among senators, federal judges, and corporate titans. She wore a shimmering diamond necklace, her graying hair styled immaculately, holding a glass of wine with serene grace.
As I walked toward her, the crowd parted slightly. Victoria turned, her sharp blue eyes locking onto mine. A subtle, dangerous smile played on her lips.
"Ms. Hayes," Victoria greeted smoothly, taking my hand in hers. "I must admit, I was pleasantly surprised when you accepted my invitation. Given your... turbulent history with domestic tragedies."
"I believe in facing my past, Mrs. Sterling," I replied, keeping my voice calm and polite. "Especially when the past insists on making late-night phone calls to my personal number."

Victoria's smile didn't fade, but her grip on my hand tightened ever so slightly.
"Walk with me to the balcony, Audrey," Victoria said quietly. "It's far too noisy inside for the kind of conversation we need to have."
