Chapter 59 - The Override

|

We burst through the heavy steel doors onto the main deck of the oil rig. The stormy night sky was lit up by the massive fires rapidly spreading across the platform. Sirens wailed into the dark ocean, and panicked mercenaries were scrambling for the lifeboats.

The rig was groaning, the massive steel support pylons buckling under the stress of the internal explosions caused by the server meltdown.

"Where is Yuri?" Elena coughed, leaning against a rusted railing.

I looked out at the churning, black ocean. There was no sign of the stealth boat. The two hours were up. He had left us.

"We have to jump!" I shouted, pulling the detonator from my pocket. I hadn't triggered the C4 yet; the server meltdown was just the beginning. The explosive charges placed on the main structural supports would ensure the Aegis network was buried beneath a thousand feet of water forever.

Suddenly, a black attack helicopter rose from the lower helipad, hovering directly in front of us. The side door slid open, revealing a man in a tailored suit holding a sniper rifle. It was the Architect.

"You ruined everything!" he screamed, aiming the rifle directly at my chest.

I didn't hesitate. I slammed my thumb down on the detonator switch.

A series of massive, earth-shattering explosions tore through the base of the rig. The entire platform violently tilted to a forty-five-degree angle. The sudden shift threw the helicopter off balance, its tail rotor clipping a falling crane.

The Architect screamed as the chopper spun out of control, crashing into the freezing ocean in a massive fireball.

"Jump!" I screamed at Elena.

We leaped off the edge of the collapsing rig, free-falling through the rain and smoke, and plunged into the icy depths of the Pacific just as the entire fortress imploded above us, sinking into the abyss.
