Chapter 23 - The Father's Sanctuary

"I told you to leave this alone, Audrey," my father said, standing in the library of his heavily fortified estate on the outskirts of the city.
He walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows, staring out into the foggy woods surrounding the perimeter wall. Armed guards patrolled the grounds, but even here, the air felt heavy with impending danger.
"They took a picture of me from a tree line while Chloe was playing twenty feet away, Dad," I said, setting the photograph down on his mahogany desk. "They know about Elena's task force. They knew which server hub we were raiding before we even breached the door."
My father turned around slowly, his face aged by years of fighting shadowy enemies in the high-stakes world of corporate intelligence.
"Arthur Vance was never the brain of the operation," my father revealed softly. "He was the enforcer. The public face. The real money—the dark capital that bought judges, police chiefs, and politicians—belonged to a syndicate known as the Iron Vanguard."
"The Iron Vanguard?" I repeated. "Why didn't you tell the FBI?"
"Because the Iron Vanguard was built by men who sit on federal oversight committees, Audrey," he answered bitterly. "If I handed those names over to a standard task force, the files would have disappeared within twenty minutes, and we would have been buried in unmarked graves."
He walked over to a heavy brass bookshelf, pulled a vintage leather book, and pressed a concealed biometric scanner behind it. The wall slid open with a soft hydraulic hiss, revealing a small, reinforced room filled with humming server racks.

"This is the air-gapped vault," my father said. "It contains the true master ledger. Your mother died trying to protect this data twenty years ago, Audrey. I won't let them take you, too."
"If my mother died for this," I said, stepping into the glowing light of the vault, "then I'm not running anymore. Show me how to unlock it."
