Chapter 38 - Midnight on the Runway

I picked up the heavy yellow envelope and carefully unsealed the metal clasp.
Inside lay a single, ancient leather journal wrapped in faded red ribbon, alongside a small crystal memory drive.
"What is this journal?" I asked, untying the ribbon with gentle fingers.
"That's your mother's personal diary," Elena revealed softly. "The one Arthur Vance claimed was locked in Marcus Sterling's safe."
I ran my fingers over the faded leather cover, tears welling in my eyes. I opened the first page, recognizing my mother's elegant, slanting handwriting instantly.
March 14th, 1994.
If anyone is reading this, it means I have failed to protect my daughter. Arthur, I know you love Audrey more than life itself. Do not let Marcus turn our family into a weapon...
I read through the pages, my heart filling with immense love and healing tears. The diary proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that my mother had loved my father until her final breath. She had been working secretly with him to expose Marcus Sterling before her tragic death. Arthur Vance’s bitter claims had been nothing more than psychological poison designed to tear my family apart.
"She loved him," I whispered, wiping a tear from my cheek. "She was trying to save us all along."

"She was a hero, Audrey," Elena said gently, placing a supportive hand on my shoulder. "Just like her daughter."
I closed the diary, holding it tight against my chest, feeling a deep, profound peace wash over my soul. The ghosts of my past were finally laid to rest.
