Chapter 36 - The Public Confrontation

|

Three weeks later, the federal courthouse in downtown Chicago was surrounded by hundreds of reporters, satellite news vans, and crowds of protesting citizens.

The fallout from the Blackout Protocol had shaken the political and financial foundations of the nation. Over fifty high-ranking officials had already been arrested, while Arthur Vance, Victoria Sterling, and Deputy Director Vance faced life sentences in federal prison without parole.

I stood on the marble steps of the courthouse, wearing a tailored dark suit, holding Chloe's small hand in mine. Elena stood beside me in her full federal dress uniform, flanked by my father's defense legal team.

A swarm of journalists pushed forward, microphones thrust toward my face.

"Ms. Hayes! Ms. Hayes!" a reporter shouted. "Your father surrendered himself to federal custody this morning! Do you believe he deserves immunity for bringing down the Iron Vanguard?"

I stepped up to the podium, looking out over the sea of cameras and flashing lights.

"My father made grave mistakes thirty years ago," I spoke clearly, my voice echoed by the loudspeakers across the plaza. "He allowed fear and greed to blind him to the monsters he was working with. But true strength is not measured by never falling—it is measured by having the courage to stand up and dismantle the evil you helped create."

The crowd went silent, taking in my words.

"The Iron Vanguard preyed on victims of domestic abuse, vulnerable citizens, and corrupt institutions," I continued firmly. "They thought silence was weakness. They thought fear would keep us quiet. They were wrong. Today, the darkness is gone. The truth belongs to the public."
