Chapter 41 - The Ticking Crystal

|

The glowing digits on the crystal drive pulsed with a rhythmic, mocking light: 71:58:12.

Outside the heavy oak doors of my study, the sounds of my daughter’s seventh birthday echoed through the hallways—Chloe’s bright laughter, the tearing of wrapping paper, and the deep, warm chuckle of my father, Marcus. It was the sound of the life we had fought so desperately to build over the past year. Now, this single wooden box threatened to burn it all to the ground.

I didn't realize my hands were shaking until the heavy brass letter opener clattered onto the mahogany desk. I picked up the handwritten note again. The Architect. The name alone sent a chill down my spine. We thought taking down Victoria Sterling and the Iron Vanguard had severed the head of the snake. We were wrong. They were just the puppet masters of Phase One.

The door creaked open, and Elena stepped in, holding two empty champagne flutes. Her smile instantly vanished the moment she saw my face.

"Audrey?" Elena asked, setting the glasses down on a side table. She closed the door behind her, her instincts from our mercenary days kicking in. "What happened? You look like you've seen a ghost."

"Worse," I whispered, turning the laptop screen toward her to show the scan I had just run on the drive. "The Vanguard wasn't the endgame, Elena. It was a smokescreen for this."

Elena walked over, her eyes narrowing as she looked at the crystal drive. "What the hell is that? The tech looks... alien. It's not standard silicon."

"It's a countdown," I replied, my voice tightening. "To a secondary global network. Satellites, defense grids, sovereign debt servers. And whoever built it hardcoded the master encryption key to Chloe’s genetic profile. If we don't stop this timer in exactly seventy-one hours, this Architect takes control of the world... or kills us trying to get my daughter."

Elena drew her concealed pistol from her waistline, checking the chamber. "Then we don't wait for them to come to us. We call your father in here. We prep the armory. The war isn't over, Audrey."
