Chapter 19 - The Family Reborn|

The ice cream parlor was filled with the warm, nostalgic scent of freshly baked waffle cones and sweet cream.
Chloe sat in a red booth near the window, a towering hot fudge sundae in front of her, chocolate smeared across her nose as she animatedly demonstrated her winning kick to my father.
"And then BOOM!" Chloe yelled, swinging her leg out under the table. "Right past the goalie's hands into the corner!"
My father clapped enthusiastically. "Sensational execution, kiddo. Pure tactical precision."
I slid into the booth beside my daughter, kissing the top of her head. "Sounds like I missed a legendary game."
"You did!" Chloe giggled, wrapping her arms around my waist. "Grandpa said we can go fishing this weekend!"
I looked across the table at my father. He looked younger now, the tension in his shoulders completely dissolved, his eyes clear and bright. He was no longer a shadow operative hunting ghosts in the dark; he was just a grandfather enjoying an autumn afternoon with his family.
"How was the new client?" he asked gently.
"She's going to be just fine," I replied, taking a spoon and sneaking a bite of Chloe's ice cream. "She just needed someone to stand beside her for a little while."
My father smiled, reaching across the table to squeeze my hand.
"You're doing great, Audrey."
"We all are," I said, looking at my daughter, then at my father.

For eleven years, I had lived in a house where love was measured by sacrifice and silence. Now, sitting in a crowded ice cream shop filled with laughter, I finally understood what real family felt like. It wasn't about control or perfection. It was about standing together when the world tried to break you.
