Chapter 40 - The Unopened Vault

A year later, on a bright Saturday morning, a courier arrived at my estate carrying a heavy wooden box bound in iron straps.
"Ms. Audrey Hayes?" the courier asked, checking his digital tablet. "This was delivered from a private estate vault in Geneva, Switzerland. It was scheduled for release on your daughter's seventh birthday."
I frowned in confusion, taking the heavy box and signing the electronic screen.
Chloe was in the living room, opening birthday presents with Elena and my father, who had been released on early parole three weeks prior and was now living peacefully in a guest house on the grounds.
I carried the wooden box to my private study, set it on the desk, and used a brass letter opener to pry open the rusted iron latch.
Inside lay a velvet-lined interior holding a sleek, glowing crystal drive—technology far more advanced than anything currently available on the public market. Beside the drive lay a small, handwritten note written in precise, unfamiliar silver ink:
Dear Audrey,
If you are reading this, Victoria Sterling and Arthur Vance have fallen, and the Iron Vanguard has been dissolved. But you must understand that the Vanguard was merely Phase One.
The master ledger your father broadcasted to the world contained only fifty percent of our global operational architecture. The remaining fifty percent—the dark servers governing sovereign debt, automated defense systems, and global energy grids—were encrypted under your daughter's genetic profile the day she was born.
The countdown timer on this crystal drive has already begun. In seventy-two hours, the secondary network will go live. You have a choice, Ms. Hayes. You can take the key and rule the world your father helped build... or you can try to stop us.
