Chapter 60 - The Unseen Board

|

Two weeks later.

The sun was setting over a quiet, secluded beach in Costa Rica. The warm breeze rustled the palm trees as I sat on the porch of a small wooden villa, watching the waves crash against the shore.

Elena was in the kitchen, cooking dinner, her arm in a sling but otherwise recovering well. Marcus was on the beach, building a sandcastle with Chloe. Her laughter drifted up to the porch, clear and unburdened.

We had survived. The Coast Guard had found us floating on debris twelve hours after the rig collapsed. By the time we made it back to the states, Marcus had managed to override the bunker locks and escape before the Architect's men realized what happened.

The Aegis network was dead. The Architect was dead. The world kept turning, completely unaware of how close it had come to total subjugation.

I took a sip of my coffee, feeling a profound, heavy sense of peace for the first time in years. It was finally over.

My satellite phone, resting on the wooden table, suddenly vibrated.

I frowned. Only Marcus and Elena knew this number. I picked it up.

A text message appeared on the screen, written in a chillingly familiar, precise silver font.

Did you really think the Architect was the top of the pyramid, Audrey? He was merely the builder. The true owners of the Aegis network are very displeased with your destruction of their property.

My breath caught in my throat. I looked up, scanning the empty beach, the dark jungle behind the villa, the endless horizon.

A second message appeared, accompanied by a high-resolution, satellite photograph of Marcus and Chloe building the sandcastle, taken mere seconds ago.

You have proven your worth, Ms. Hayes. The Council of Twelve formally requests your presence in Geneva. If you decline, the next strike will not come with a timer.

May you like

I slowly set the phone down as the screen faded to black. I looked out at the peaceful ocean, the realization sinking in like a cold stone.

The game hadn't ended. They had just flipped the board.
