Chapter 28 - The Name I Kept
The Registry investigation became the largest identity fraud case in the country’s history.
Judges were removed.
Officials resigned.
Families who had purchased altered records began negotiating with prosecutors.
Ava created a protected process allowing innocent victims to preserve their legal identities while the fraudulent transactions were separated from their lives.
Nora reunited with Daniel and chose to keep the name Nora Keene.
Lydia testified against Malcolm in exchange for protection. She selected a new name—one that had never belonged to anyone else.
Rebecca moved into a small house near Elise.
Their relationship did not immediately heal.
Some mornings they spoke for hours.
Other days Elise could not answer her calls.
Victor pleaded guilty to conspiracy, document fraud and obstruction. His testimony reduced his sentence, but it did not erase what he had done.
Before sentencing, Elise visited him.
He appeared thinner and calmer.
“What name will you use?” he asked.
“Elise Ward.”
“Even after everything?”
“It is the name I built my life with. Malcolm doesn’t get to decide it was never mine.”
Victor nodded.
Elise handed him a copy of the documentary she had completed about the Registry.
Its final scene showed four empty chairs representing four children whose names had been used as weapons against them.
Victor read the title.
THE RIGHT TO REMAIN.
“When will it be released?”
“Tomorrow.”
Elise stood to leave.
Victor touched the glass between them.
“Was any part of us real?”
Elise looked at him for a long moment.
“Yes,” she said. “That is why the lie mattered.”
Outside the prison, Nora waited beside a car.
She held an envelope bearing Samuel Ward’s handwriting.
It had been discovered beneath the Orchard House.
