Chapter 47 - Who Celeste Used to Be

Celeste had always known.
She was the previous Mara Quinn.
When Project Palinode removed Mara’s years at the observatory, those memories had been placed inside Celeste. Mara retained the childhood and marriage. Celeste retained the research, Eli and the First House.
They were not sisters.
They were one life divided into two people.
“You let me believe I was the real Mara,” Mara said.
“You needed a life the Curator couldn’t predict.”
“And what did you need?”
Celeste looked toward Eli.
“A reason to survive.”
Together, Mara and Celeste authorized the coexistence protocol. The transmitter began rebuilding the awakening signal.
The Curator appeared on the observation platform above them.
He held no weapon. He did not need one.
“You believe integration creates freedom,” he said. “It creates instability.”
Daniel confronted him.
“Are you Thomas Aster?”
The Curator smiled.
“I was, once.”
Then he revealed the final secret.
The Curator was not a single person. The title belonged to a sequence of hosts carrying the same controlling memory pattern.
If this body died or disappeared, the Curator would awaken in another.
“Which one?” Mara asked.
He looked around the room.
“The closest compatible mind.”
Every light in the observatory turned red.
The system announced that the Curator transfer had already begun.
