Chapter 34 - The Architect
They reached Lake Calder shortly before sunrise.
The artificial island did not appear on public maps, but Eli’s coordinates led them to a submerged access road beneath the shallow northern edge of the lake.
At the end stood the abandoned terminal from Eli’s drawing.
Inside the first building, Mara found architectural plans bearing her signature.
The plans were dated eleven years earlier.
At that time, Mara had been a university student with no professional license and no memory of visiting Lake Calder.
Daniel examined the documents.
“These aren’t copies. The ink and paper match the date.”
Celeste discovered a concealed elevator behind a rusted freight door. It responded only when Mara placed her palm against the scanner.
A mechanical voice welcomed her.
“Architect Quinn. Access restored.”
The underground level contained bedrooms, observation chambers and a circular laboratory filled with empty glass booths. Every room had been designed according to principles Mara recognized as her own.
Comfort without escape.
Familiarity without privacy.
At the center of the laboratory stood a scale model of Raven House.
Eli pointed toward a tiny figure inside it.
The figure represented a woman standing behind the basement wall.
When Mara removed it, a compartment opened beneath the model.
Inside lay a personnel file.
The photograph showed Mara at nineteen.
The name beneath it was not Mara Quinn.
