HE NEVER KNEW I WAS HOME / Chapter 42 / 50

Chapter 42 - The Story Eli Repeated

Eli was not Daniel’s son.

He was carrying Evelyn Aster’s memory pattern.

The original Evelyn had disappeared at age nine, shortly before Project Palinode was shut down. Daniel believed the Curator had preserved her memories and transferred them repeatedly through generations of children.

Mara remembered the stories Eli told inside Raven House.

A girl in a yellow room.

A locked garden.

A father who promised to return before the bells rang.

They were not stories.

They were Evelyn’s memories.

Lenora connected the pieces. Eli’s mind held the access sequence for Palinode’s human archive. Mara carried the database, but Eli carried the method for reading it.

Celeste had been engineered to keep them apart.

“Why would she bring him to the Curator?” Elias asked.

“Because Celeste’s instructions may have changed,” Lenora answered.

Mara returned to the recovered identity map. One location remained active despite the Curator’s deletions.

An abandoned observatory in the Cascade Mountains.

Daniel recognized it immediately.

“Amelia called it the First House.”

Before they could leave, Mara received a video call from Celeste.

Eli sat safely beside her inside a circular room.

A man stood behind them, hidden by the darkness.

Celeste spoke quickly.

“Mara, I need you to listen. The Curator is not holding us prisoner.”

The man stepped into the light.

Daniel dropped the phone.

The Curator had Daniel’s original face.
