Chapter 43 - Two Men Named Thomas

The man at the observatory introduced himself as Thomas Aster.

Daniel insisted the original Thomas had died.

The Curator laughed.

“You remember dying because I gave you that memory.”

According to him, Daniel was not Thomas transferred into another body. Daniel was a manufactured copy created to draw suspicion away from the real founder of Palinode.

Daniel refused to believe him.

The Curator recited private details from Daniel’s childhood: the hidden initials beneath his mother’s piano, the name of his first dog and the final words Evelyn spoke before disappearing.

Daniel’s certainty began to fracture.

Mara focused on Eli.

“Are you safe?”

“Yes,” the boy answered. “But the bells will ring soon.”

Behind him, the observatory’s mechanical clock showed eleven forty-three.

At midnight, the First House would transmit the awakening signal to every active Palinode subject.

Thousands of people would regain buried identities simultaneously.

Some might remember crimes committed against them.

Others might forget the lives they had built.

The Curator wanted Mara to decide whether the signal should be released.

“You created the choice,” he said. “Only you can complete it.”

Celeste leaned closer to the camera.

“Don’t come here, Mara.”

Then she looked toward someone outside the frame.

Her expression changed.

“I was wrong. There’s another person in the observatory.”

The call ended.

Elias checked the map.

A new identity had appeared beside Eli’s.

It carried Mara’s name.
