Chapter 46 - The Choice That Was Already Made
Mara had ten minutes to decide.
Stopping the signal would preserve the present lives of thousands of replacements, but every buried identity would vanish permanently.
Releasing it would expose Palinode but could destroy families, governments and institutions overnight.
Daniel argued for stopping it.
“Truth without control becomes another weapon.”
Celeste disagreed.
“Those people deserve to know what was taken from them.”
Elias remained silent until Mara asked him directly.
“What would you choose?”
“I would choose to know,” he said. “Even if the truth proved I was never your husband.”
Mara looked at Eli.
“What do you want?”
The boy thought carefully.
“I want to remember Evelyn. But I don’t want Eli to disappear.”
His answer revealed the flaw in the Curator’s choice. They had been told only one identity could survive.
Amelia confirmed that the early experiments had allowed memories to coexist. The Curator removed that ability because conflicted subjects were harder to control.
Mara connected her pendant to the transmitter.
Instead of stopping or releasing the original signal, she began rewriting it.
The system warned that a third option required authorization from two architects.
Mara placed her hand on the scanner.
The first authorization appeared:
AMELIA VOSS.
A second hand pressed against the panel beside hers.
Celeste smiled.
