Chapter 48 - The Man Fighting Himself
Elias collapsed beside the transmitter.
When he opened his eyes, his voice sounded different.
“Mara, disconnect the system.”
She stepped back.
“Are you Elias?”
“For the moment.”
The Curator’s memories were entering him in waves. Elias could feel them replacing emotional associations, changing the meaning of names and faces.
He remembered Mara as a research asset.
Then as his wife.
Then as an enemy.
Then as the only person he had ever loved.
“Lock me outside,” he said.
Mara refused.
“If I leave you here, he wins.”
“If you keep me near the transmitter, he takes control of everything.”
Eli approached him.
He placed one small hand against Elias’s forehead and began repeating the story of the yellow room. Evelyn’s memory pattern disrupted the transfer long enough for Elias to reach the manual controls.
He redirected the Curator sequence away from his own mind.
Daniel saw the new destination.
“No.”
The Curator’s memories began transferring into the identity map itself. If successful, he would exist across every connected subject.
Mara and Celeste activated the coexistence signal.
The observatory shook as both transmissions collided.
Across the screens, thousands of names changed from red to white.
Then every screen went dark.
When emergency power returned, Elias was gone.
